Maria Del Carmen Mercado
Maria Del Carmen Mercado was born in the Dominican Republic and discovered her design ability at just six years old. Maria received a degree in fashion design from the Fashion Institute of Technology. An entrepreneur at heart, she launched her own company after graduating. Maria is also a fiber artist and creates eye-catching collections of scarves and accessories. Not only does Maria design, she also hand dyes fabric to create apparel and accessories. As an artist who cares about the environment, Maria recycles leftover materials into wall hangings and other enthralling art. She playfully uses texture to create work that can be symbolic, decorative, memorable, or all of the above.
Major galleries throughout Rhode Island, including the Atrium Gallery, the Pawtucket Arts Collaboration, and the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) Museum have featured Maria’s work. She hopes to inspire others and looks forward to showing her designs all over the world.
For Autmn/Winter, “real women with curves” directed Maria’s Superior collection. Any woman wearing one of Maria’s pieces will turn heads as she walks into a room. You can find Maria’s stunning work at Lola’s Boutique in Providence and on Etsy.com
